Police Officer, Firefighter Rescue Man From Submerged Car In Patchogue Bay: Cops

The pair dove into the water, broke one of the car's windows, pulled him from the sedan and brought him safely to shore, cops say.

PATCHOGUE, NY — A Patchogue firefighter rescued a man who was trapped in his car after it became submerged in the bay Thursday morning, Suffolk police said.

A 33-year-old Patchogue man was driving a 2017 Nissan Sedan on South Ocean Avenue at Mascot Dock when it went off the dock into the water at 5 a.m., according to police.

Fifth Precinct Officer Edward Pitre, along with firefighter Peter Feehan, dove into the water, broke one of the car’s windows, pulled the man from the sedan and brought him safely to shore, police said.

The man, Officer Pitre, and Feehan were taken to Long Island Community Hospital in East Patchogue, treated for minor injuries, and released, according to police.

The car's plunge and the man's rescue were captured by a News 12 crew who were on the scene reporting another story.

Reporter Caroline Flynn told co-anchors Erin Colton and Rich Barrabi that her photographer, Sue Caron, spotted the car go off the dock while filming, and the two jumped into action to call 911.

Flynn said, "This is something — we've reported — unfortunately when it doesn't go very well. This could have been so much worse, and we're just so grateful that he is okay and we were here to help."
