Long Island's County Police Departments Arrest 61 On DWI Charges Over Labor Day Weekend

Nassau logged 32, while Suffolk arrested 29 on impaired driving-related charges. State police say 409 were arrested over summer.

LONG ISLAND, NY — Long Island's two largest police departments — Nassau and Suffolk — logged in 61 arrests for drunken driving over the Labor Day weekend, officials said.

Nassau police arrested 32 people between Thursday and Monday, while Suffolk arrested 29 people between Aug. 30 and Sept. 2.

New York State Police told News 12 that 24 people were arrested over the weekend.

The agency announced Tuesday that from Memorial Day to Labor Day, troopers arrested 409 people on drunk driving-related charges. Officials also said were 2,180 crashes, and of the 2,180 crashes, five involved fatalities, 536 injuries, and 1,639 involved property damage.

Of the 19,195 tickets issued, 5,202 were speeding tickets, 1,492 were for safety restraints, and 1,602 were distracted driving tickets.

The agency said it will continue to enforce the vehicle and traffic law with vigilance, and although the summer is coming to an end, its message will not change: "Do not drive under the influence, obey the speed limit, wear your seatbelt, and distracted driving will not be tolerated."

"Driving is a shared responsibility, and the [New York State Police] will continue to protect motorist safety," the statement concluded.
