North Patchogue Fire Department Donates To Murphy Foundation

Department donates $6,400 to fallen solider's family.

The North Patchogue Fire Department announced today it has given a donation to the family of a local US Navy SEAL who was killed in Afghanistan.

The department gave a split donation of $6,400 to the Lt. Michael Murphy Navy SEAL Museum and the Lt. Michael Murphy Scholarship Fund, according to a department Facebook post.

"Thank you to our first responders, the fire heroes of the North Patchogue Fire Department who protect our community which was Lt. Michael Murphy’s community," said Murphy's father, Daniel Murphy. "On behalf of the Board of Directors of the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation and the Board Trustees of the LT Michael P. Murphy Navy SEAL Museum, I thank you for your generous support of these organizations and for always being there first and foremost for our community."

Murphy, a Patchogue native, was killed in Afghanistan in 2005 during a reconnaissance mission when his four-man SEAL team was attacked by a group of Taliban fighters. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, the country's highest personal military decoration.
