Man Charged in Scuffle with Police in Pearl River, Orangetown Officer's Hand Broken

An Orange County man who was acting disorderly on Central Avenue in Pearl River and refused to leave the area got into a scuffle with police officers, leaving one of the cops with a broken hand late Sunday night, according to Orangetown Police.

The incident began about 11:30 p.m. at 14 E. Central Ave., where town officers said they spotted Michael J. O'Shea, 27, 0f 209 Russel Road, Hurley, NY, acting disorderly and "causing public alarm." Police said that when town officers asked O'Shea to leave the area he became combative and was then told he was under arrested for disorderly conduct.

Police said O'Shea then lunged at town officers, trying to hit them. As officers tried to handcuff O'Shea, police said a scuffle ensued and O'Shea and town officers fell to the ground.

In that scuffle, and Orangetown officer broke a hand. The officer was taken to Nyack Hospital for treatment.

O'Shea was awaiting arraignment on Monday on charges of second-degree assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.

The arrest was among nearly 20 reported by Orangetown police during and after Sunday's St. Patrick's Day Parade in Pearl River.
