MTA Raises Fares On Metro-North Railroad

Monthly and weekly fares will remain lower than they were before the pandemic thanks to a 10 percent discount from March 2022, the MTA said.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The MTA voted unanimously to increase monthly and weekly fares up to 4.5 percent for Metro-North Railroad and the rest of the system.

The MTA said, thanks to the additional 10 percent discount that went into effect in March 2022, monthly and weekly fares will remain lower than they were before the COVID pandemic.

The fares will go up around Aug. 20.

The discount for traveling off-peak on Metro-North will be standardized to 26 percent, up from 25 percent.

Customers on the Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines will be spared any increase, the MTA said. All other ticket types will increase by as much as 10 percent.

MTA board member Neal Zuckerman said he didn’t consider this a fare hike.

“This is an increase. I don’t want a hike,” he said. “A hike is something like double digits. This is no hike.”

According to the table of proposed fares, monthly increases on the Hudson and Harlem lines will range from 3.1 percent for Zone 1, which is Grand Central Terminal to Harlem-125th Street, to 4.4 percent for Zone 9, which is Poughkeepsie and Harlem Valley.

For Poughkeepsie, the monthly fare will go up to $489.50, from $469.

Increases in one-way peak fares for the Hudson and Harlem lines range from 3 percent for Zone 1 to 4.8 percent for Zone 9.

On the New Haven Line, monthly increases will be 4.3 percent for Mount Vernon East, Pelham and New Rochelle; 3.9 percent for Larchmont, Mamaroneck and Harrison and 3.7 percent for Rye and Port Chester.
