Help Ukraine: Donate Crutches, Canes, Trauma Kits For The Wounded

The Hudson Valley-based Afya Foundation has already shipped more than 160,000 lbs. of medical equipment to partners in Ukraine and Poland.

HUDSON VALLEY, NY — The Afya Foundation, whose work was highlighted by Gov. Kathy Hochul in March, has begun two new initiatives to serve the urgent medical needs of the Ukrainian people: creating and sending trauma kits and collecting and shipping "durable medical equipment" such as wheelchairs, crutches and canes.

These two programs continue the work the Yonkers-based charity has been doing to help Ukrainians since the invasion began. Afya has shipped more than 160,000 lbs. or $2 million worth of medical supplies to its partners in the country and nearby in Poland.

You can help with the durable medical equipment initiative by taking donations in adult and pediatric sizes to the Afya warehouse starting with a 3-day push April 22-24 and on subsequent Fridays. Drop-offs are by appointment only; contact info@afyafoundation.org to schedule one.

"By donating DME that you no longer need you are at the same time supporting Ukraine and protecting the environment," Afya officials pointed out.

The used items — which also could include slings, cervical collars, rollators and braces — must be in good working condition.

The trauma kits must contain new items, of course, because it's about first aid.

Most civilian casualties are caused by explosive weapons with a wide impact area, Afya officials said. Access to trauma kits is key to helping those that suffer shrapnel wounds after such attacks.

You can help the trauma-kit effort by purchasing supplies off of Afya's new Amazon Wish List and either donating a complete kit or individual items directly to its warehouse.

You can also make your efforts go further: A donation of $25 dollars to the Afya Disaster Response Hub supports the foundation's ability to get supplies into the hands of medical teams on the frontlines in Ukraine.
