Annual Student Essay Contest Honors Judy Jacobs

Jacobs, a former teacher, served in the Nassau County Legislature from 1996-2016.

PLAINVIEW, NY — In honor of Women's History Month, and the legacy of Judy Jacobs, the community is invited to participate in the essay contest in her name.

The fifth annual contest for fifth- through eighth-grade students in the 16th Legislative District.

Jacobs was a longtime Nassau County Legislator and Presiding Officer.

Students who enter this year’s contest will be responding to the question: “What role can education play in empowering girls to become leaders?”

The theme is especially fitting as Jacobs began her career as a public school teacher before being elected to the newly-formed Nassau County Legislature in 1995, where she served with distinction until her untimely death in 2016.

“I am proud to say that our celebration of Judy Jacobs - a fierce and fearless trailblazer who served Legislative District 16 with tremendous distinction – is now in its fifth year, and I look forward to seeing how community’s young leaders are embracing education to help them achieve their dreams" Deputy Minority Leader Arnold Drucker said.

The deadline for submissions is Monday, April 14. Contest winners will be announced during an event set for 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 24 at the Jericho Public Library.
