UPDATE: Major Flooding Hits Plainview; Amazing Photos
Roads closed, cars stranded, conditions hazardous.
Significant flooding turned some Plainview roads into rivers Friday, stranding cars, closing streets and leaving the community a mess.
The bulk of the rain was tapering off early Saturday morning in Plainview and the roads were passable. Few people were out after the worst of the deluge had taken its toll.
Just before sunset the heaviest rains came from the remnants of Tropical Storm Andrea. Plainview was among the hardest-hit areas in the region, where a National Weather Service spotter recorded 5 inches of rainfall, many of it in a matter of hours.
Streets suddenly became streams, leaving stranded cars in many parts of the community. The vicinity of Hay Path Road and Plainview Road in Old Bethpage and parts of Manetto Hill Road near the Mid-Island Y JCC are reported shut down, firefighters and community members said.
Some side streets were also flooding. Photos show cars stalled out in roadways. Some were still where they shut down early today.
No injuries were reported by early Saturday.
The rain is expected to taper off by morning with occasional passing showers into the afternoon.
