Containers Holding Used Cooking Oil Tampered with in Port Chester

Storage containers holding used cooking oil awaiting recycling were tampered with at two downtown Port Chester shops, according to Port Chester Police.

The shops, located at 506 and 508 Westchester Ave., were uncertain whether any oil was taken, but they noted locks on oil containers had been tampered with.

Like many products that can be recycled, cooking oil, too, has been a target for thieves. Many businesses that recycle cooking oil store used oil in containers outside the store, where they can be picked up by bulk recycling trucks.

But being stored outdoors also makes the oil a target for theft.
