From Port Chester High School: Nine Port Chester High School students received certificates for completing a month-long, 16-hour health career program sponsored by Greenwich Hospital. Their parents, families, teachers and principal, Dr. Mitchell Combs, attended the ceremony on May 21 in the school library.
The students are Vilma Celia Alvarez, Banely Chilin, Emanuel Diaz, George Gonzalez, Rita Luzuriaga, Lorena Maldonado, Erick Montaleza, Ana Ochoa, and Rubab Zehra. All of the students are recent arrivals to this country and are bi-lingual.
During the four-week program, the students toured Greenwich Hospital and they visited different departments in the hospital to learn what it means to be a pharmacist, radiologist, respiratory therapist, information systems specialist and lab technologist, among other healthcare careers.
The education requirements for the various healthcare careers were discussed, as were policies such as privacy laws, the need for service excellence, and the culture of wellness among the hospital’s employees.
The Port Chester Healthcare Career Program has been offered for four years. It is directed by Kathy Carley Spanier MSN, Director of Community Health at Greenwich Hospital. Sue Asselin, RN, worked with the students this year.
