Police Arrest Accused Parking Meter Thief

The Port Chester police department has arrested a man accused of stealing money from village parking meters over the last several months. Arthur Henderson, a 43-year-old Bronx resident is accused of allegedly defeating the locking mechanisms of the coin operated meters.

Henderson was charged with several misdemeanors: two counts of petty larceny, two counts of criminal mischief, two counts of criminal tampering in the third degree, one count of possession of burglar’s tools and one count of criminal possession of stolen property.

The arrest comes after a four-month long investigation into suspicious activity related to the meter collections, first reported by Village Manager Chris Steers in Feb. 2013. The police department worked closely with Steers throughout the investigation. This is not the first time the village has faced meter theft. In 2010, officials had to hire an outside agency to collect because they didn't trust their employees to do it and they admitted to having no idea how much was stolen.

The current investigation is ongoing and additional charges may be filed. Police did not report how much money they think Henderson stole from the meters.
