PORT JEFFERSON, NY — On Friday night, six brand new high school graduates in Port Jefferson rushed from their graduation ceremony directly to fight a fire. The graduates, 17 and 18, are all volunteers with the Port Jefferson Fire Department and when the alarms began sounding minutes after the Port Jefferson High School ceremony, they ran to the fire house still wearing their caps and gowns.

The fire was in a nearby garage and was quickly controlled, Newsday reported.

Via Twitter, high school principal Eric Haruthunian congratulated the new alumni—Ryan Parmegiani, Kasumi Layne-Stasik, Hunter Volpi, Andrew Patterson, Shane Hartig and Peter Rizzo— for their efforts.
