Here are the top stories today in Port Jefferson:

  1. The Brookport, 5 years in the making in Port Jeff, celebrates opening: The Brookport complex is now open and just a short stroll away from the heart of downtown Port Jefferson.
The developers, locally elected officials, tenants and others gathered Wednesday night to celebrate and mark the milestone with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting. The project, by The Gitto Group, took 5 years to get where it is today: a fully leased, three-story, mixed-use residential and commercial project with amenities like a fitness center and a furnished rooftop overlooking the Long Island Sound. (Greater Long Island)
  2. Man charged with larceny in Port Jeff: A criminal defendant allegedly assaulted earlier this year by Suffolk County police officers, after he had been handcuffed and arrested, pleaded guilty Wednesday to petit larceny during a brief hearing in Central Islip. Christopher Cruz of Long Beach, who had faced felony grand larceny and third-degree criminal mischief charges, acknowledged before Suffolk District Court Judge Richard Dunne that he had entered a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee parked on Oakland Avenue in Port Jefferson Station on Feb. 23 and drove off without the owner’s permission. Dunne sentenced Cruz to time served. (Newsday)
  3. Base 10 Brainiacs In Port Jefferson: Edna Louise Spear Elementary School fourth grade students in Kristen Boney's class had a fun math lesson that took them on a school scavenger hunt. Finding "Base Ten Brainiac" task cards in the hallways, the students strengthened their math proficiencies by finding and solving the equations on their personal recording sheets.(Press Release Desk)
  4. Nearby News: Beloved LI restaurant closes after 27 years. The 27-year-old Stony Brook restaurant, Pentimento, served it's last meal on Sunday night. On Monday morning all the supplies and equipment went up for sale; prices on provisions in the restaurant’s market were slashed. On Tuesday afternoon Cusumano and her partner, Dennis Young, the restaurant’s founder and chef, were there as their business was literally being dismantled: the deep fryer already had someone’s name on it and people were carting away the light fixtures from the garden and appraising stacks of hotel pans.
