Fire Breaks Out In Ambulance At Nursing Facility In Port Jefferson: Police
It was one of two vehicle fires to break out locally over the weekend, Suffolk police say.
SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — A Port Jefferson Emergency Medical Services ambulance caught fire at a nursing facility on Saturday night, Suffolk police said.
Electronics in the ambulance caught fire at Water's Edge Rehab and Nursing Center on Dark Hollow Road in Port Jefferson at around 10:40 p.m., and the Port Jefferson Fire Department responded to extinguish the flames, according to police.
In a Facebook post, fire department officials said that EMS was on scene treating a patient when the ambulance caught fire, and the proximity to the building caused a smoke condition within the structure, but fortunately no fire spread to the facility.

The staff at the healthcare facility quickly removed patients from the affected area and maintained a shelter-in-place protocol as per the recommendation of EMS and the fire department, officials said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, according to the fire department.

The ambulance fire was the first of two vehicle fires to break out nearby over the weekend.
Another fire broke out in a vehicle on Gooseberry Drive in Rocky Point at around 10:21 p.m., and the Rocky Point Fire Department responded, police said.
No one was hurt in either fire, and police do not suspect any criminality, a spokesperson said.
