HISTORY: Hardhat Diver Poses in Port Jefferson

Photo taken in November, 1896.

One November more than a hundred years ago a hardhat diver and his support crew posed for a photo on the harbor creating this image that has all the nostalgia of a Jules Verne novel come to life in Port Jefferson.

Shot by locally famous photographer Arthur S. Greene in 1896, the picture "was taken on the waterfront at what is now Bayles Park, East Broadway, Port Jefferson," according to a description of the photo in the village's historical archive.

The photo is courtesy of the Port Jefferson Historical Society. For more historical images head over to the Port Jefferson Digital Archive.
