LI 5K Run Will See U.S. Runners And Kenyans Together For One Cause

This Sunday, U.S. runners will compete against Kenyans running on the other side of the world but to benefit a Kenyan orphanage.

PORT JEFFERSON STATION, NY — It's an annual tradition for 18 years that spans two continents and supports a good cause.

The Kenya/USA Bi-Continental 5K Run/Walk is set for Sunday in Port Jefferson Station on this side of the pond. The race will kick off at the Setauket-Port Jefferson Greenway Trail at 10 a.m.

This year, the race will be in honor of community member Larry Hohler, who died in May. It will benefit the Jersusha Mwaria Hope Children's Fund, a non-profit organization that supports an orphanage housing 79 children in Kenya, according to its Facebook page.

Organizers from the Rocky Point Rotary Club advised participants to enter the parking lot at the traffic light between Enterprise Car Rental and 7-Eleven on Route 112. Registration will take place between 9 and 9:30 a.m. The suggested donation to enter the race is $30, but runners who secure over $100 in pledges can run for free, according to organizers.
