Port Jeff Fifth Grader Ties For First in Piano Competition

In March, fifth grader Amy Chang from in Port Jefferson shared a first place win in a piano competition at the Steinway Used Piano Gallery in Melville. She tied a sixth grader from East Setauket in the Late Intermediate Division of the competition held by the Suffolk Piano Teachers Foundation.

Chang won by playing Etude Allegro by Yoshinao Nakada, according to a statement issued by the foundation. Seventy-two other students competed in five separate divisions.

“In this Rock/Rap dominated era, it is noteworthy that the immortal music of such composers as Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff are continuing to be convincingly performed by many of today’s generation,” the statement said.

The first placed winners in each category will go on to perform their winning pieces at an awards ceremony and recital at on Wednesday, June 6 at 5 and 7 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public.
