Port Jefferson Community Celebrates its Senior Class

Earl L. Vandermeulen High School graduation ceremony was held Friday night.

Student Organization President Amanda San Roman advised her fellow seniors to "take a step back from the busyness of life and realize how wonderful of a place this has been to grow up in."

Salutatorian Zachary Graziano's words to his classmates were to embrace the moments in life that are most meaningful. He reminded them to "not forget about doing things for no reason at all."

And valedictorian Gabriel Davis thanked the school community for all it has given to him and his classmates. “To the entire faculty of Port Jefferson High School – I thank you for not only bestowing upon us your wisdom and pouring your hearts into your curricula, but also for believing in us and supporting us,” he said.

Those were some of the sentiments shared by senior class leaders at Friday's graduation ceremonies at Earl L. Vandermeulen High School, which sent a new class of seniors into the world as young adults.

The ceremony also honored longtime teacher Laurie McMillen, awarding her an honorary diploma for her 33 years of service to the school district.

Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Bossert described the students as a group that cares sincerely for each other, one that has "raised the bar of excellence for all who follow."

“They have made a commitment to healthy choices, and have learned to balance academics with commitment and dedication to athletics, music and the performing arts," Bossert said. "They are headed off to some of the most prestigious learning institutions, and some are leaving to protect our freedom as members of our military. I am confident that they will continue to impress and be successful in whatever path in life they take.”
