Here are the top 5 stories in Port Jefferson today:

  1. Restaurants across Long Island looked a little different on Monday when Gov. Kathy Hochul's temporary mask or vaccine mandate went into effect. Some restaurants on Long Island are requiring customers to wear a face mask and spent part of Sunday prepping for the new mandate. Hochul says public places that opt for the mask requirement, rather than proof of full vaccination, must ensure that all patrons age 2 and older wear a mask at all times while indoors. (News 12)
  2. Authorities say a woman is facing a DWI charge after she crashed into a Suffolk patrol car with an officer inside in Port Jefferson Station. Police say just after midnight, Janet Marlowe was intoxicated when she was driving a Honda Civic northbound on Route 112 near Sagamore Hill Drive. Officers say she crashed her car into a parked patrol car, causing the Civic to flip on its side. Police said the patrol car had its emergency lights flashing and there was an officer sitting inside. The officer was taken to the hospital and treated for minor injuries. (Newsbreak)
  3. Suffolk police are asking for the public's help to find two teens who have been missing since last Thursday. Vincent Abolafia and his girlfriend Kaileigh Catalano, both of Manorville and both 15, were last seen at the Ronkonkoma LIRR station with the intention of boarding the 3:11 p.m. train to Manhattan on Thursday. The teens were each reported missing that same evening. The two may have been seen together in Times Square, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or Seventh Squad detectives at 631-852-8752. (Patch)
  4. As soon as Comsewoge High School Students and Staff found out that Michael Abatiello, class of 2021, graduated from his Marine boot camp last week, they excitedly reached out to him. When he came back to the high school, students and staff cheered and presented him with gifts that students fundraised for Comsewogue Active Warrior Network. “It is a priority for us to stay connected to our military graduates serving all over the world,” said Jennifer Quinn, superintendent of schools. 5. Four Port Jefferson Middle School students shared a unique spotlight when they read their poetry to the many spectators during the 25th annual Charles Dickens Festival in Port Jefferson on Dec. 3. Accompanied by teacher Monica Consalvo, sixth grader Elayna Jacobs, seventh graders Deia Colosi and Julie Friedman, and eighth grader Gianna Viviano shared their winter-inspired poems during the special evening lantern dedication that served as a backdrop to the village’s transformation to the Dickensian era, with streets filled with roaming characters including Dickens Mayor, Father Christmas, Scrooge, the Town Crier and the beloved chimney sweeps.
