Port Jefferson Hospital Earns 'A' Grade In Safety From Non-Profit

It's the 10th recognition for the hospital over the years.

PORT JEFFERSON, NY — St. Charles Hospital was recognized with an 'A' Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization which sets standards for excellence in patient care, on its Spring 2025 Hospital Safety Survey, officials said Thursday.

The national distinction recognizes each hospital’s outstanding achievements in patient safety and harm prevention.

St. Charles Hospital has received 10 'A' grades from The Leapfrog Group.

The hospital features four Centers of Excellence: Maternal/Child Services, Orthopedics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Robotic Surgery, and has received numerous specialty
certifications from The Joint Commission for Total Hip and Knee Replacement, Stroke and
Palliative Care.

The hospital recently received prestigious recognition from the Surgical Review Corporation as a Center of Excellence in Robotic and Hernia Surgery, as well as recognition from the American Heart/Stroke Association for outstanding stroke care and Type 2 diabetes.

In addition, St. Charles Hospital is recognized as the region’s most comprehensive rehabilitation provider and is the only hospital on Long Island with CARF-accreditation for its inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation program for children and adults.

Catholic Health's president and Chief Executive Officer, Patrick O’Shaughnessy, noted that "delivering exceptional care to every patient, every day is a core part of our mission."

“As our hospitals continue to receive top recognition for safety and clinical excellence, we integrate those best practices system-wide," he said. "This unified approach allows us to elevate care across all our facilities, and in doing so, help set new standards for the broader healthcare community. We’re proud to lead in safety and quality.”

Catholic Health's executive vice president and chief medical officer, Jason Golbin, said that "patient safety and well-being are central to the organization's "commitment to excellence," and
staffers are proud "to consistently earn top marks from The Leapfrog Group.”

“By embedding safety into every aspect of our care, we not only deliver superior clinical outcomes but also foster the trust and confidence our patients and their families deserve," he added.
