Here are the top five stories today in Port Jefferson:
- Did you know that people used to ski all winter on Long Island? The fun started in 1965 at Bald Hill in Farmingville. Back in the day, that hill was 344 feet tall. Visit the Greater Long Island page to check some pictures of local kids having a blast at the Bald Hill Ski Bowl! (Greater Long Island)
- Duchenne Care Center opens in Stony Brook. The facility is the first certified center on Long Island to care for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This genetic condition weakens the bones and heart and can lead to cardiac and respiratory complications. (News 12 Hudson Valley)
- Port Jefferson Library is hosting a Martin Luther King Jr. Art Project on Monday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Kids of all are invited to participate in the celebration. Each kid will color a hand that matches their beautiful skin tone, and then a librarian will put them together in a heart to spread a love message of diversity in our community. - The fourteen buildings lot sheep Pasture Road in Port Jefferson Station will soon be demolished. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development granted $450,000 to be invested in the demolishing and cleaning of the site. Read the full story here. (Patch)
- Nearby News: A Lake Grove man has been arrested for approaching an 11-year-old-child while she was walking back home from Selden Middle School. According to the police, the 28-year-old man made sexual comments while following her. Luckily, she managed to escape, but the suspect crashed into a pole when he tried to flee from the scene. - Brookhaven Town will spread animal adoption awareness throughout the year. The town discussed a new plan in a board meeting to help pets to find their forever homes. Currently, 81 cats and 70 dogs live in the shelter, waiting for adoption. (Patch)
- Stony Brook student musicians will perform for cancer care patients in the hospital every Wednesday. The project aims to create a relaxing and entertaining environment for patients undergoing treatments. (Patch)
