Port Jefferson Station Doctor Pleads Guilty in Oxycodone Case

Frank Telang, 56, a Port Jefferson Station neurologist who was arrested last December and charged with accepting cash in exchange for writing prescriptions for oxycodone and other controlled substances without an examination pleaded guilty in court on Tuesday, according to a statement released by U.S. Attorney’s Office.

A statement from the U.S. Justice Department reports that Telang “sold prescriptions for oxycodone and other controlled substances to undercover Suffolk County police officers working in conjunction with the DEA between April 13, 2011 and October 20, 2011.”

“In addition, Telang was observed meeting a purported patient at night on December 6, 2011, in a parking lot near the Long Island Expressway to provide controlled substance prescriptions,” the report said. “When approached by law enforcement, Telang crumpled up a prescription he had been holding and attempted to hide it in the door of his vehicle.”

He later went to his office in Port Jefferson Station and allegedly altered the medical file of the patient.

The undercover officers said that they were able to get prescriptions from Telang for cash without a medical examination.

In Central Islip Criminal Court, Telang entered his guilty plea to illegally distributing oxycodone and income tax evasion.

The Port Jefferson Station doctor admitted to meeting patients at off-hours in the evening in parking lots near his office in Port Jefferson Station to provide prescriptions without performing any medical examinations. He also admitted to failing to pay taxes on the cash he received for the illegal prescriptions.

Telang faces a maximum sentence of 25 years in prison. As part of his plea, he also agreed to forfeit $10,500.
