PORT JEFFERSON, NY —Port Jefferson Village employees — including code enforcement officers and constables — have been banned from carrying guns while on duty, after one was found in a village hall bathroom within the last three weeks, Newsday reported.

Village officials have been mulling over the weapons ban for the past year, but it took on some urgency when the personal gun of a village code enforcement officer was found, posing a potential threat of public harm, Mayor Lauren Sheprow told the outlet.

"Appropriate action" was taken against the employee, she told the outlet.
