The Dish: Sandwich Cubano at La Parrilla

One of the newest restaurants in Port Jefferson is La Parrilla, a Spanish Grill that replaced a local staple, after almost three decades in the village. No doubt that La Parrilla has a lot to live up to.

The staff was friendly, attentive and very eager to please. Our waitress said the restaurant had only been open for about two weeks.

We decided to stop by and give it a try.

For lunch, the restaurant offers a variety of typical Spanish entrees from Arroz con Pollo to Quesadillas. I opted for the Sandwich Cubano.

I was not sorry.

The Dish: Sandwich Cubano ($11.95).

What's Inside: Pulled pork, Swiss cheese, ham and mustard on a what they call a traditional toasted Spanish bread.

Eat this Because: If you love the mix of flavors and textures that comes with a Cuban sandwich, then you will not be disappointed by La Parrilla’s offering. The sandwich is stuffed with pork and heated to perfection. There was just enough ham and Swiss layered on so as not to over power the stringy pork. It was plenty of food for the big eater and possibly enough to share.

Side Dish: This meal came with a choice of two sides. I can’t resist Plantain. So that’s exactly what I got and again, not disappointed. It really went well with the sandwich and added to the authenticity of the meal’s Spanish theme. I also chose Spinach, which was bursting with what tasted like garlic salt. No worries, I washed it all down with a Dos Equis Amber.
