
Summer seems to end almost as quickly as it starts.
For kids, the days seem endless and well, they sometimes seem that way for adults. We thought we'd take a few moments and look back at some of the summer's biggest headlines.
1. Comsewogue Supe: Help Us With State Testing, or Remove Me
State testing of our students has many parents and school officials concerned, so much so that one superintendent demand his elected officials to help enact change, or to begin proceedings to remove him from office.
"Please help us," he wrote in an Aug. 7 letter, which was sent to local officials, "If not, then I request on behalf of our residents – your constituents – you initiate proceedings to have me removed as superintendent."
2. Woman Opens Home, and Heart, to Dog with Cancer
This story, of a woman who adopted a pit bull with cancer, garnered more than 2,500 shares on Facebook. Many may have passed this pup up for adoption, but Erica Kutzing of Port Jefferson said it was love at first sight: As soon as she saw an Instagram photo of Lucia, a 12-year-old pit bull who had been diagnosed with cancer, she wanted to adopt her.
3. Excessive Heat Breaks Record Temps, Keeps Going
Scorching hot temperatures have broken several records across Long Island in July, as daily highs climb toward triple digits as locals flocked to area beaches and backyard pools to stay cool.

5. Port Jefferson Station Couple Wins $1M Powerball Prize
The traditional gift for a 50th wedding anniversary is supposed to be gold, but for one local couple, that gift was green instead.
A Powerball ticket purchased as part of a 50th wedding anniversary celebration won a $1 million for Port Jefferson Station resident Allen Balzarano and his wife.
The winning ticket was purchased at Carry-All Wine & Liquor in Mt. Sinai.
