$100K Grant Helps Fix Damaged Roof At Port Washington Elementary School
Parents were concerned for their children after the damaged roof started leaking.
The Port Washington School District recently received a $100,000 grant to help replace and repair damaged a roof at Guggenheim Elementary School prior to the start of the school year.
The roof at the elementary school, located at 38 Poplar Place in Sands Point, was damaged earlier in the year during storms and was leaking, sparking a safety concern for students.
“A key component to a good education is a healthy and safe learning environment," Sen. Elaine Phillips, who helped secure the funding, said in a press release. "Earlier this year I heard from numerous concerned parents regarding the well-being of their children due to leaking roofs at the Guggenheim Elementary School."

The funding, administered through the Economic Development Assistance Program, will offset the unanticipated capital improvement costs the district incurred for repairing and replacing sections of the roof at the school.
"I applaud the school district for taking immediate steps to repair the damage before the new school year starts and appreciate being able to provide this funding to help offset the unforeseen costs so they are not passed onto the taxpayers," Phillips said.

The repairs and replacements were made to Guggenheim Elementary School over the summer, so the school would be ready for students at the start of the school year.
“This type of funding assistance for unanticipated capital improvement needs is gratefully acknowledged and appreciated," Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Mooney said. "The two sections of the roof scheduled for replacement and the two sections scheduled for repair during the summer of 2017, in accordance with the 2017-2018 community approved school budget, have been completed."
