57 Dogs Rescued From Puppy Mills In 'Deplorable Conditions' Come To LI
North Shore Animal League brought the dogs from Missouri for a "second chance of life." The small-breed dogs will be adoptable this weekend.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — 57 puppies and small-breed dogs arrived on Long Island Monday after a three-day drive from Missouri. The animals were rescued from puppy mills and backyard breeders, the North Shore Animal League announced.
The dogs were found in "deplorable conditions," Ted Moriartes of the league said on Monday.
The animal league's rescue team headed to Missouri after getting a call from rescue group National Mill Dog Rescue, who heard that a commercial breeding facility was being shut down for health violations.

The dogs are mostly small-breed pure and mixed dogs, including poodles, Yorkshire Terriers, and Pomeranians. After the North Shore Animal League's veterinarians clear them, they will be available for adoption beginning this weekend at the organization's location, 25 Davis Ave., Port Washington.

Ilene Schreibman from the animal league told Patch that dogs rescued from breeding operations are considered expendable.
"After they’re done breeding, they’re deemed no longer of value."
"57 animals now have a second chance at life," Moriartes said.
