Adoptable Pet Of The Week: Everest Is A 'Lovable, Giant Mush'

Plenty of adorable dogs are up for adoption in North Hempstead. This week we're featuring Everest, a dog that values quality time over toys.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — For those looking to adopt a pet, a great place to look for your new family member is at the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter. The facility, located at 75 Marino Ave. in Port Washington, houses dozens of dogs — and all of them need a furever home.

At Patch, we round up a list of adoptable dogs for a series called "Patch's Adoptable Pets of the Week." This week, one new dog came to the shelter — so we decided to just shine the spotlight on that resident pooch. His name is Everest.

The dog-only shelter is facilitating adoptions by appointment only. An appointment can be made by calling 516-869-6311. Days and hours of operation are Monday through Friday (except holidays) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

One of our volunteers described Everest as a "loveable, giant mush!"— and frankly we agree! Everest is a ~1-year-old Mastiff/ Pointer mix (our best guess!) with a bit to learn but a lot to give.

He wants to be with you rather than play with toys and has learned his commands in a short time at the shelter. He is strong on a leash and needs work with his jumpiness — therefore Everest is not for the frail — but nothing that can't be fixed with a bit of training!

Everest gets along well with other dogs and we believe would make a great family pet with children ages 10+ due to his size and exuberance. If you are interested in learning more about Everest, you can call the shelter at 516-869-6311 or email animalshelter@northhempsteadny.gov to request an adoption application.
