Adoptable Pet Of The Week: Gumbo Has 'A Lot Of Love To Give'

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — For those looking to adopt a pet, a great place to look for your new family member is at the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter. The facility, located at 75 Marino Ave. in Port Washington, houses dozens of dogs — and all of them need a furever home.

At Patch, we round up a list of adoptable dogs for a series called "Patch's Adoptable Pets of the Week." This week, one new dog came to the shelter — so we decided to just shine the spotlight on that resident pooch. His name is Gumbo.

The dog-only shelter is facilitating adoptions by appointment only. An appointment can be made by calling 516-869-6311. Days and hours of operation are Monday through Friday (except holidays) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Gumbo is a 1-year-old German Shepherd/ Retriever mix that came to us through the Shelter Connection's rescue program from an overcrowded shelter in Georgia. Gumbo is a big, handsome, and goofy boy with a lot of love to give! He is a "leaner" and loves being pet and meeting new people.

He can be mouthy and does need a bit of manners training, but he's got a big heart and is willing to learn. Gumbo gets along well with other dogs and is seeking a family with children 10+ due to his size and exuberance.
