PORT WASHINGTON, NY — For those looking to adopt a pet, a great place to look for your new family member is at the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter. The facility, located at 75 Marino Ave. in Port Washington, houses dozens of dogs — and all of them need a furever home.

Here, we've rounded up a list of adoptable dogs for a series called "Patch's Adoptable Pets of the Week." This week, we're featuring Belle, Joey, and Zane.

The dog-only shelter is facilitating adoptions by appointment only. An appointment can be made by calling 516-869-6311. Days and hours of operation are Monday through Friday (except holidays) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Info from the shelter:

Belle is a senior Beabull (Beagle/English bulldog) that was surrendered to us because her owner couldn't take care of her anymore. Belle is a simple gal that enjoys a nice stroll on our nature trail, chasing the tennis ball, and a few pats on the back.

When she first came to us she didn't seem much interested in treats, but in true Beagle fashion she's come around and is now very treat motivated — she's learned her commands like a pro!

Don't let her age fool you — she is a sporty gal that would make a fun walking companion but enjoy relaxing in the house. Belle needs to be the only dog in the house.

JOEY

Info from the shelter:

Joey came up from Georgia through The Shelter Connection's rescue program. He came from a home that let the breeding on the property get out of control. Luckily, he is very social and friendly, but came knowing no commands or how to walk on a leash.

He has made some great progress in a short amount of time! He is an energetic, smart guy that is looking for an active family dedicated to continuing his training. He gets along with other dogs and would need a companion that can match his play level.

Joey has a prey drive for small animals so he is not recommended to live with cats or other small pets in the house. Due to his exuberance, we are recommending a home with children 10+.

ZANE

Info from the shelter:

Zane is a 5-year-old Terrier/Hound mix that came to the shelter from an overcrowded shelter in Texas through The Shelter Connection's Rescue program. Zane started off shy, but has blossomed into a fun-loving and affectionate boy — you can even say he's charming!

He loves to go for walks, is quickly learning his commands, and is having a blast playing on the agility course. Zane loves the outdoors, but is happiest cuddling up next to you- he thinks he's a lap dog!

We were told by the previous shelter that he gets along well with female dogs but have not been able to dog test him yet at the shelter. A meeting would be required with any other dogs in the home at the shelter.
