PORT WASHINGTON, NY — For those looking to adopt a pet, a great place to look for your new family member is at the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter. The facility, located at 75 Marino Ave. in Port Washington, houses dozens of dogs — and all of them need a furever home.

Here, we've rounded up a list of adoptable dogs for a series called "Patch's Adoptable Pets of the Week." This week, we're featuring Diego, Sally, and Bill.

The dog-only shelter is facilitating adoptions by appointment only. An appointment can be made by calling 516-869-6311. Days and hours of operation are Monday through Friday (except holidays) from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

DIEGO

Info from the shelter:

Diego is our beloved dapper senior and one of our longest residents at the shelter — it's about time he finds his forever home! Diego enjoys time outside and walking on our nature trail. He has become more affectionate with age and loves to be pet and give kisses. Diego enjoys all people he meets but would have to be the only pet in the home.

SALLY

Info from the shelter:

Sally is a 5-year-old, super sweet Cane Corso mix that can sometimes be unsure of herself- she is looking for a patient and loving partner to show her that the world doesn't have to be scary. She arrived here as a stray in June 2019 and once we saw those ears we had to name her "Sally" after Sally Field's role in the Flying Nun!

Sally is shy when she meets new people, but a few treats and a calm voice are all she needs to feel comfortable. Once she is, she's a regular mush that would rather be in your lap than going for a walk or playing with a toy! Sally would thrive in a dog-experienced household without young children and as the only pet in the house.

BILL

TONH Shelter Staff

Info from the shelter:

Bill is a 2 ½-year-old shepherd mix that came as a rescue through The Shelter Connection's rescue program from Georgia. Bill gets very nervous in new spaces, but once he becomes used to the space he will relax and even become playful.

Bill perks up around other dogs, and we believe a home with another confident dog will help him to see that the world is not so scary! When Bill is comfortable in a space he is very friendly and likes to snuggle up and be petted — he has had positive reactions to every person he has met.

Bill would thrive in a patient, dog-savvy home that will give him the time to adjust to a new space. Bill will also require a home with a solid, 6-foot fence.
