Annual Port Washington Polar Plunge To Support Special Olympics

"Freezin' for a Reason" takes place on Saturday, Feb. 8.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Walk in the cold water for a good cause. The "Freezin' for a Reason" is back for its annual plunge into Hempstead Harbor.

Hundreds of North Hempstead residents are expected to jump in the water at North Hempstead Beach Park to benefit Special Olympics New York.

Registration for the Saturday, Feb. 8 event begins at 9 a.m. with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m.

"I’ve been plunging for four years, so if you’ve got a heart of gold and nerves of steel, then come on down and plunge with me!" Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena said. "And if a cold splash isn’t your speed, you’re still welcome to cheer on your neighbors as they help raise funds for this fantastic cause."

Special Olympics New York provides year-round sports training and athletic competition for all children and adults with intellectual disabilities at no cost to them or their families.

Participants can register as individuals or as teams of family, friends, or co-workers by visiting the Special Olympics website.

Those under 18 must have written content from a parent or guardian to take the plunge.
