Celebrate Lunar New Year In North Hempstead On Feb. 9: ICYMI

The Town of North Hempstead's Lunar New Year celebration will include live music, cultural performances, and festive photo opportunities.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — The Town of North Hempstead with usher in the Year of the Tiger with a celebration on Wednesday outside Town Hall.

Beginning at 4:45 p.m., Town Hall will reverberate with the sounds of traditional drums, live music, and cultural performances. The Great Neck Chinese Association will be distributing red envelopes with Chinese calligraphy writing and the Manhasset Association of Chinese Americans will provide festive photo opportunities, the Town said in a press release.

Chinese New Year is a 15-day festival in China and in Asian communities around the world that falls sometime between Jan. 21-Feb. 20 on Western calendars every year, but simultaneously with the new moon. It's also called Lunar New Year for that reason.

Each year is represented by one of 12 zodiac animals. They are the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. 2022 is the Year of the Tiger.
