Celebrating Purim in Port Washington

A time of dressing in costumes, noshing and plenty of noise-making.

Purim, the holiday that celebrates Esther’s protection of the Jewish people from Haman, begins at sundown Wednesday.

That means, weather permitting, children and adults alike will be dressing in costume, enjoying a Megillah reading to hear the story of Purim and shaking their groggers (noisemakers) at the mere mention of Hamen. And there will be plenty of noshing on hamentashen (triangular-shaped cookies with fruit or other fillings) .

  • Port Jewish Center’s Purim Spiel - Purim, Pizza and Pasta, starting at 6 p.m. 20 Manorhaven Boulevard
  • Reconstructionist Synagogue of The North Shore’s Megillah Reading & Purim Play, starting at 6 p.m., 1001 Plandome Road, Plandome
  • Chabad of Port Washington is celebrating Purim “60’s style.” Megillah reading at 6:15 p.m., festivities (reservations required) 7:15 p.m. 80 Shore Road
  • Temple Beth Israel Wednesday 6:30 p.m. Family Purim Service and Megillah Reading, Purim Show, Music, Costumes. Thursday, 9:30 a.m. Family Purim Service & Megillah Reading. 1 Temple Drive
  • Community Synagogue Thursday, 3:30 pm carnival – A separate room for older students includes a sticky wall, photo booth and more. Tons of new games and bouncy fun for children of all ages. 5 p.m. –Megillah reading and Purim Shpiel. Admission: $20 covers the carnival, craft, lunch, cotton candy and prizes. Pay at the door.
