Demolition Work to Begin at Port Washington Police District’s Future Headquarters Site

Another Major Step Forward in Developing the District's New Headquarters

The Port Washington Police District is preparing to take another major step forward in the development of its new headquarters project as demolition work on the former Knowles Funeral Home property and adjacent vacant homes is set to begin. Site preparation is expected to start on October 29th with the demolition scheduled to begin on or around November 3rd and should be completed within six weeks.

“It has been years in the making to get us to this point, but this marks the true beginning of transforming this long-vacant property into the new home of the Port Washington Police District,” said Chief of Police Robert Del Muro. “This has been a long-time coming for this community and we are excited to officially begin the construction process of creating a modern, sustainable and suitable headquarters that will serve the community for decades to come.”

The demolition will be performed with heavy equipment, such as excavators and payloaders, brought on-site to efficiently remove the existing structures and to complete necessary site work, like grading. The District and its contractors have already completed the environmental studies and remediation of any materials of concern from the existing buildings. Throughout the project, a storm water management plan will be fully implemented to protect the community and surrounding environment. In addition, inspectors and monitoring equipment will remain on-site during the demolition to ensure that all activity complies with state and local regulations, as well as the District’s contract specifications.

All demolition activity will take place during normal business hours and in compliance with the Town of North Hempstead’s construction ordinances. Construction vehicles will enter the site from Mackey Avenue and remain on the property as much as possible to minimize neighborhood traffic impacts.

Following demolition and site clean-up, additional site work will commence in preparation for the construction of the new headquarters.
