Free Situational Training Program To Be Held In North Hempstead

Officials say participants will learn how to be vigilant for suspicious behavior, which could be indicators of a future attack.

MANHASSET, NY — Following the recent tragedies in Uvalde and Buffalo, the Town of North Hempstead has arranged a Situational Awareness Training program for residents next week.

Conducted by Nassau County Police's Homeland Security Unit, the program will take place Wednesday, Aug. 24 at Clinton G. Martin Park in New Hyde Park.

"These terrible tragedies throughout our nation have left us all feeling very uneasy and worried, and while we all hope to never face such a situation, this program is a great opportunity to recognize potential warning sign and learn survival strategies," Town Supervisor Jennifer DeSena said. "The safety and wellbeing of our residents (are) one of my top priorities, and by working with the Nassau County Police Department Homeland Security Unit to offer this program, our residents will become better educated and more prepared."

The 90-minute lecture is designed to teach participants how to be vigilant for suspicious behavior, which could be indicators of a future attack. The free workshop will include topics such as:

  • emergency response plans
  • knowing your evacuation route
  • what to do if you see a suspicious package
  • understanding warning signs

Residents will learn the proper way to respond in different situations, as instructors will identify best practices learned from past incidents, officials said. A brief question and answer session will take place following the seminar.
