Help In Haiti: North Hempstead Holds Supply Drive Through Aug. 27

Officials in North Hempstead are holding a supply drive to help the people of Haiti recover from a devastating 7.2-magnitude earthquake.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — The Town of North Hempstead is hosting a drive to collect badly needed supplies for Haiti in the wake of a devastating 7.2-magnitude earthquake.

Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, Councilmember Viviana Russell, State Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages, and Nassau County Legislator Carrié Solages announced the donation drive for victims of last week's disaster on Wednesday.

"The Town of North Hempstead sends its deepest condolences to the residents of Saint-Louis du Sud, Haiti, along with their family and friends, in the wake of the catastrophic earthquake that occurred on Saturday," Bosworth said. "We are organizing this donation drive and relief effort in the hopes of providing much-needed help and comfort to those impacted by this tragic event."

The drive is looking for specific items. The only items that will be accepted are:

  • water containers
  • over-the-counter drugs
  • casting, bandages, wound care kits, and first aid kits
  • baby supplies
  • medical supplies
  • personal and feminine hygiene products
  • and rehabilitation equipment (i.e., crutches)

Donations can be dropped off at the following locations:

  • North Hempstead Town Hall — 220 Plandome Rd., Manhasset (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • North Hempstead Town Clerk's Office — 200 Plandome Rd., Manhasset (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)
  • Michael J. Tully Park — 1801 Evergreen Ave., in New Hyde Park (seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
  • "Yes We Can" Community Center — 141 Garden St., Westbury (seven days a week, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.)

Monetary donations will be accepted via the Haitian American Nurses Association of Greater New York. All locations will be accepting donations through Aug. 27 before sending the supplies to Haiti. For more information, call Assemblywoman Solages' office at 516-599-2972.
