Homeless Man Steals Car, Crashes Twice In Manhasset: Police

The man crashed into a box truck after he fled the first collision, police say.

A homeless man was arrested on Tuesday for stealing a car and causing two collisions in Manhasset, police say.

According to authorities, 23-year-old Gilbert Stanton entered a vehicle that was parked and running in the parking lot of 1410 Northern Boulevard at 3:10 p.m. Three juveniles exited the vehicle before Stanton drove off, police say.

Stanton was then involved in an auto accident at Northern Boulevard and Clapham Street, police say. He left the scene and continued driving to the Long Island Expressway South Service Road, where he collided with a box truck stopped in traffic at the intersection of New Hyde Park Road, police say.

Responding officers placed Stanton under arrest without incidnet. No injuries were reported.

He was charged with third-degree grand larceny, third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, three counts of endangering the welfare of a child and several New York State vehicle and traffic law violations. He will be arraigned Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
