New Year's Holiday: LIRR Announces Service Changes

In anticipation of lower ridership due to concerns over COVID-19, the LIRR has announced service changes for the New Year's holiday.

LONG ISLAND — The Long Island Rail Road has announced service changes for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day in anticipation of lower ridership due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

Here's how it shakes out for LIRR riders:

New Year's Eve

The LIRR will operate on a regular weekday schedule with an additional 13 eastbound trains in the afternoon and 11 additional westbound trains in the evening to Penn Station.

There will be no extra westbound service to Atlantic Terminal now that the New Year's Eve concert at Barclay's Center has been canceled.

New Year's Day

The LIRR will operate on a regular weekend schedule, with six additional early morning trains from Penn Station for riders heading home after New Year's Eve events.

Due to the cancellation of the New Year's Eve concert at Barclay's Center, the LIRR will not offer extra eastbound service from Atlantic Terminal.

Riders can access information about all planned service changes through the MTA's digital resources, which are updated in real-time.

Customers can also contact the MTA by phone. Information is available by dialing 511, which is the New York State Travel Information Line. Those who are deaf or hard of hearing can use their preferred service provider for the free 711 relay to reach the MTA at 511, transportation officials say.
