The Town of North Hempstead was once again recognized as a "Tree City USA" by the Arbor Day Foundation.
NORTH HEMPSTEAD, NY — The Town of North Hempstead has been recognized as a "Tree City USA" for the ninth year, town officials announced.
The designation is given by the Arbor Day Foundation, which recognizes towns and cities that have a "viable tree management plan and program," town officials said in a news release. Criteria for communities to be eligible for the recognition include maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day, according to Arbor Day Foundation's website.
"I thank the Arbor Day Foundation for recognizing the Town’s commitment to the environment, especially in planting and caring for our trees," Judi Bosworth, the town supervisor, said in a statement. "We are proud to again earn this prestigious designation that exemplifies our track record of enacting successful environmental initiatives."
