📰 News we're reading

1. More Than 50 Dogs Rescued From Commercial Breeding Facilities, Animal Advocates Say (patch.com) — Animal lovers in Port Washington will be glad to know that more than 50 dogs rescued from commercial breeding facilities have just arrived at North Shore Animal League America’s local campus. The Long Island news roundup also touches on immigration protests, a fatal Nassau crash, a major offshore wind project, new anti-trafficking rules for hotels, and the closing of a beloved café.

2. Bombay Kitchen plans to move out of Port Washington (longislandpress.com) — Bombay Kitchen plans to move its odor-producing cooking operations out of Port Washington North, potentially ending a long-running nuisance for nearby residents while keeping some production local. At the same meeting, village trustees extended the company’s permit, approved a 2026 fire protection contract with the Port Washington Fire Department, and reviewed the village’s solid financial audit.

3. Newcomer D'Alonzo defeats incumbent Kurz for Water Pollution Control District seat (longislandpress.com) — Port Washington voters have elected newcomer Joseph D’Alonzo to the Water Pollution Control District, decisively unseating incumbent commissioner Brandon Kurz after a year of board infighting and legal disputes. D’Alonzo, a lifelong resident, says he’ll refocus the district on wastewater services, keep Sunset Park public, and bring a calmer, more collaborative tone to local politics.

4. Long Island school districts with positive lead tests: (news12.com) — Port Washington schools are among Nassau County districts where water samples recently tested above New York State’s now-stricter lead limits, triggering required remediation steps. The new data show more than 60 Long Island districts affected, raising concerns about children’s exposure. Schools with high readings must shut contaminated taps, provide alternative water, and fix the problem before reopening fixtures.
