NYPD Officers Up For 'Heroes Award' For Rescue Near Sands Point

When a woman became trapped underneath a capsized boat, an NYPD rescue team sprang into action.

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Two NYPD officers could win a Daily News Hometown Heroes Award after springing into action to save a woman who became trapped underneath a capsized boat off the coast of Sands Point, according to a report.

On June 9, Officer James Roche and Detective Brian Mullen were lowered from a helicopter into cool, fast-moving waters near Execution Rocks where a distressed woman was in an air pocket, facing possible hypothermia, and wasn't wearing a life jacket. After a harrowing several minutes, Roche was able to find a hatch and jar the woman free.

He brought her 7 feet to the surface and swam about 50 feet to a rescue boat. The woman then rushed to North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset.
