Over 100 Port Washington Students Honored For Excellence In Math
The students had to meet several criteria to qualify, including maintaining a cumulative overall GPA of at least 3.75.
PORT WASHINGTON, NY — More than 100 high school students have been honored and recognized in Port Washington for their excellence in math. Paul D. Schreiber High School recently welcomed a new class of Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society inductees at a ceremony in the building's auditorium.
Mu Alpha Theta is a national high school and two-year college mathematics honor society. The organization, created in 1957, is meant to inspire interest and enjoyment in math.
"Congratulations to our mathematicians in Schreiber who continue to excel and bring our district to new heights of academic excellence," Michael Hynes, the district superintendent, said in a news release. "The district is proud to recognize these 104 distinguished students who were selected for their scholarship, endeavor to be leaders, service and untarnished character."

Students had to meet the following criteria to be eligible:
- Maintain a cumulative overall GPA of at least 3.75
- Maintain a non-weighted average of B+ over three years of Regents or honors math with no year-end mathematic grade lower than a B;
- Received higher than a 75 percent on the mathematics Regents;
- Remained in a mathematics class throughout senior year
- Received recommendation letters from two math teachers and the grade level administrator
- Complete at least five hours each semester either tutoring in math, participating in Mathletes; serving as an officer of Mu Alpha Theta; or organizing Pi Day.
