Police Car Strikes Pedestrians, Seriously Injuring 1, In Nassau

A 19-year-old suffered serious head injuries on Thursday evening.

A Nassau County Police officer struck two pedestrians, seriously injuring one, while driving a marked vehicle on Thursday evening in Manhasset, police say.

According to authorities, the officer was driving the patrol car northbound on Community Drive when he struck two male pedestrians at 6:06 p.m. Police say the road was dimly lit and the pedestrians were wearing dark clothing and walking in the direction of traffic in the northbound lanes.

The 19-year-old pedestrian suffered serious head injuries and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The 17-year-old pedestrian refused medical treatment at the scene.

The police officer was also taken to an area hospital for treatment. Police do not suspect criminality at this time.

The patrol car was impounded for a brake and safety check.
