Recent Study Of Port Water Quality Is 'Biased' And 'Inaccurate,' Officials Say

Study that claims cancer-causing contaminants are in the water is an "unbelievable misrepresentation of the truth," the water district says.

The Port Washington Water District said the recently study by the Environmental Working Group, which claims there are cancer-causing chemicals in their drinking water, is biased and inaccurate.

The EWG study claimed three contaminants above health guidelines were detected across the district's water supply. The Port Washington Water District serves approximately 34,000 people.

"In a recent biased report filled with inaccuracies, misinterpretations and ulterior motives solely to profit from the sale of water filters, the Port Washington Water District is cited for having three harmful contaminants found in its water and at levels which exceed existing health standards. This is an unbelievable misrepresentation of the truth as the contaminants cited all fall far below the established federal and state thresholds. The District actively monitors its water wells for these contaminants, in addition to hundreds of other potential contaminants. Heptachlor Epoxide, one of the three contaminants cited in the report, has a maximum contaminant level of 2.0 parts per billion. Yet the highest recorded measure of Heptachlor Epoxide in the Port Washington Water District was only 0.046 parts per billion.
Side by side with water providers across Long Island, the Port Washington Water District is actively working with health regulators to establish limits and treatment guidelines for unregulated contaminants. Our customers can rest assured that the water being delivered to their homes and businesses does not contain harmful levels of any contaminant. Any customers with concerns about their water quality are encouraged to contact the District office at 516-767-0171. In addition, the District is regulated by the Nassau County Department of Health, and we encourage you to also contact them at (516) 227-9692 for additional information."
