Remembering The 9/11 Victims From Port Washington

PORT WASHINGTON, NY — Saturday marks 20 years since the deadliest terror attack on American soil.

On Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist-hijacked passenger planes slammed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field near rural Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The era-defining tragedies took the lives of 2,977 people, including more than 400 first responders.

Two decades later — even in the midst of a global pandemic — Americans will come together to honor those whose lives were snuffed out by terrorism.

Among those killed were 11 Port Washington residents:

• Martin N. DeMeo, 47
• Olga Kristin Gould White, 64
• Timothy C. Kelly, 37
• Justin John McCarthy, 29
• Antonio J. Rodrigues, 35
• Bart Joseph Ruggiere, 32
• John S. Salerno, 31
• Keiichiro Takahashi, 53
• Dinah Webster, 50

The Town of North Hempstead will be holding a memorial service at 8:15 a.m. on Saturday. During the service at Manhasset Valley Park, officials will unveil a monument featuring a 19-foot-long beam from the World Trade Center.
