Suozzi is requesting a meeting with Trump to "discuss how we can achieve our shared goals on immigration and border security."

The congressman said Mejia's case "reflects exactly the kind of situation you addressed in your recent remarks."

Suozzi pointed to Trump's comments on immigrant farm workers and hospitality workers. For those who've "spent years contributing to our economy and society. Deporting those who have 'proven themselves to be very good people' is not the answer, and we must apply "a lot common sense." Suozzi said he agrees with that.

Meija, 41, has a 14-year-old daughter, who is a U.S. citizen, Newsday said.
