Taking A Stand Against Substance Abuse in Port Washington
Through 'Project Purple,' an initiative of former NBA athlete Chris Herren, students will wear purple at Friday's basketball games.
This week at Port Washington’s Schreiber High School, purple is the new black.
That’s because students, faculty and sports fans are standing up against substance abuse by taking part in Project Purple. The program is a national substance abuse awareness initiative of The Herren Project, a non-profit foundation established by former NBA basketball player, Chris Herren, who recently spoke at the high school. The program aims to assist individuals and families struggling with addiction.
The Schreiber High School Letter Club and Health Education Department are busy spreading the word this week about the dangers of substance abuse, especially for teens.

And students and staff are showing support by filling out purple hearts around the main lobby, leading to the gym where the “Senior Night Girls Basketball Game” and “PYA Night” will take place Friday at 4:30 p.m. for junior varsity, and 6:30 p.m. for varsity.
The entire school community is encouraged to support the cause by wearing purple in school Friday.
