WEATHER UPDATE: Snow, Freezing Rain Target Port Washington

Snowfall projections inch upward for yet another round of wintry weather.

By Ryan Bonner

Much of Long Island could see a few inches of snow on Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.

The latest snowfall projections call for 2-3 inches for a large chunk of the island. Parts of the North Shore in Nassau may see 3-4 inches, while eastern Suffolk is currently in line for 1-2 inches of the white stuff.

The NWS says there is ”still some question on exactly how much snow will fall.” The amount is largely dependent on how quickly the bulk of the snow arrives before it changes over to a wintry mix.

Snow is expected mainly after 4 p.m. on Saturday. It will change to freezing rain and then rain late Saturday night into Sunday morning, the NWS says.

Most of Long Island, except for eastern Suffolk, should receive “at least a glaze” of ice from the storm, the NWS says.

The latest wintry weather will come on the heels of record-breaking cold. Record daily low temperatures were set this morning across the region–3 degrees at JFK Airport, 3 degrees at LaGuardia Airport, 2 degrees at MacArthur Airport–according to the weather service.

Wind chill temperatures on Long Island dropped to 18 below zero early Friday morning. A wind chill advisory expired at 10 a.m. Friday, but that doesn’t mean you should break out your shorts. Wind chill temperatures will likely range from 0 to 10 below through Friday afternoon.

“If venturing outside, make sure to cover any exposed areas to avoid frostbite,” the NWS said in a special weather statement issued Friday morning.

A high temperature in the mid-teens Friday will drop into the single digits Friday night. By Saturday it will be a welcome 31 degrees – though, of course, snow is in the forecast, yet again.

On Sunday, it will be a positively balmy 41 degrees, and while much of the remaining snow will melt, roads will likely be icy Sunday night when temperatures dip again to 19 degrees. Long Islanders by now know what to likely expect for Monday: icy conditions as temperatures hover at around 24 degrees during the day and 7 degrees at night.

Take heart, spring is a mere 28 days away.
