BROOKLYN, NY — A 12-year-old boy was fatally shot while sitting in a parked car with his family in Brooklyn on Thursday night, according to police.

The child and two relatives — a 20-year-old woman and 8-year-old girl — had pulled over to eat food near Linden Boulevard and East 56th Street around 7:45 p.m. when bullets descended on their Toyota, according to police.

The bullets hit both the 12-year-old boy and the 20-year-old woman multiple times, police said. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, NYPD Assistant Chief Michael Kemper said at a press conference.

The shooting is at least the third time a child has been hurt in shooting in New York City the last few weeks.

"I continue to ask: What about the innocent people? What about people that’s sitting in their cars and they're shot and killed?" said Mayor Eric Adams said from a press conference Thursday night. "When are we going to start fighting for the innocent people in this city?"

The 20-year-old woman, who was rushed into surgery, was expected to survive as of Thursday night, police said.

The 8-year-old girl who was sitting in the back seat was uninjured, officials said.

Police said Thursday it was not immediately clear what the motive for the shooting was and whether the family were its intended targets.

Two black sedans were seen fleeing the seen, though details about the cars were not clear, police said.

The shooting comes amid a pandemic-driven spike in gun violence that has not spared even the youngest New Yorkers.

Just in the last few weeks, a 3-year-old was shot in the shoulder as her father picked her up from daycare in Brownsville and an 11-month-old was shot in the Bronx. A 7-year-old was also hurt in a shooting in Coney Island earlier this year.

The mayor — who has made quelling gun violence a focal point of his first few months in office — pointed Thursday to the number of illegal guns on city streets, particularly in East Flatbush's 67th Precinct.

"As long as we have guns and a revolving door system — we’re going to continue to come to crime scenes like this," Adams said Thursday. "It’s time for it to stop."
